A person, who can only read but cannot write, is not literate. In general, low literacy rates are associated with high birth rates. The length of schooling has, however, often been considered as a basis for distinguishing between a literate and illiterate.

As I think about what literacy means to me, the most important thought that comes to mind is my understanding of it: the ability to read and write. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. He also disapproves of the ability to read and write ones name in the language of his/her country as the criterion for defining a literate.
